This project reflects upon the migration of young Ethiopians from the rural part of the country to the Middle East in search of professional opportunities. The job application process often relies on candidates sending profile photos. Such a large number of Ethiopians are looking for work, but with standardized administration procedures, individuality is lost. Posing as both applicant and reviewer, I ‘selected’ the photographs I was most interested in and inserted my own portrait into theirs, while also performing as a prospective job seeker.
Performance and installation as part of the exhibition Fana Wogi at the Modern Art Museum/Gebre Kristos Desta Center, Addis Ababa (2013).
