Cinema Lada

Cinema Lada is a mobile, open-air cinema project initiated in 2015 at the Modern Art Museum in Addis Ababa, later appearing near Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and continuing its journey in 2021. Conceived in collaboration with Raul Wach, the project centers around the Lada Zhiguli, a 30-year-old car model iconic in Addis Ababa’s urban landscape and historically linked to Ethiopia’s socialist past and its ties to the Eastern Bloc. In Germany, the Lada is a rare sight, yet it evokes a shared memory across continents. As a living monument to a complex political history, the Lada becomes both a screen and a symbol, hosting a program of international video works that reflect on mobility, memory, and transcontinental connections. Cinema Lada reclaims public space for collective viewing and historical reflection, transforming a familiar vehicle into a site of cultural exchange.
