Practising Water

"Practising ፡ Water: ፡ Of ፡ Rituals ፡ and ፡ Engagements" ፡ is ፡ an ፡ extensive ፡ project ፡ that ፡ delves ፡ into ፡ the ፡ chronicles ፡ of ፡ water, ፡ spirituality, ፡ and ፡ the ፡ symbiotic ፡ relationships ፡ they ፡ create ፡ as ፡ modes ፡ of ፡ communication ፡ and ፡ language. ፡ This ፡ project ፡ encompasses ፡ the ፡ surrounding ፡ nature, ፡ including ፡ humans ፡ as ፡ inevitable ፡ entities ፡ when ፡ discussing ፡ the ፡ connections ፡ between ፡ water ፡ and ፡ spirituality. ፡ The ፡ research ፡ aims ፡ to ፡ identify ፡ and ፡ understand ፡ the ፡ vocabulary ፡ of ፡ agencies ፡ in ፡ creating ፡ narratives ፡ that ፡ look ፡ beyond ፡ the ፡ physical ፡ use ፡ of ፡ water ፡ and ፡ its ፡ anthropogenic ፡ manifestations።

The ፡ project ፡ navigates ፡ relationships ፡ through ፡ the ፡ everyday ፡ accounts ፡ of ፡ habitats ፡ living ፡ off, ፡ by, ፡ with, ፡ or ፡ in ፡ surface ፡ water. ፡ It ፡ seeks ፡ to ፡ understand ፡ how ፡ indigeneity ፡ engages ፡ with ፡ water ፡ believed ፡ to ፡ have ፡ spiritual ፡ significance ፡ and ፡ how ፡ this ፡ relationality ፡ forges ፡ communication ፡ to ፡ accumulate ፡ knowledge ፡ while ፡ challenging ፡ epistemicide. ፡ The ፡ term ፡ "water" ፡ in ፡ this ፡ project ፡ specifically ፡ refers ፡ to ፡ surface ፡ water ፡ that ፡ flows ፡ within ፡ particular ፡ time-places, ፡ emphasizing ፡ a ፡ localized ፡ perspective, ፡ particularly ፡ from ፡ an ፡ indigenous ፡ relatability።

Guided ፡ by ፡ questions ፡ such ፡ as ፡ what ፡ it ፡ means ፡ to ፡ listen ፡ to ፡ or ፡ speak ፡ with ፡ water, ፡ the ፡ project ፡ explores ፡ the ፡ vocabulary ፡ that ፡ emerges ፡ from ፡ various ፡ cultures' ፡ relationships ፡ with ፡ bodies ፡ of ፡ water. ፡ This ፡ vocabulary ፡ reveals ፡ insights ፡ about ፡ the ፡ cultures ፡ observed, ፡ the ፡ status ፡ of ፡ the ፡ water ፡ bodies, ፡ and ፡ the ፡ position ፡ of ፡ the ፡ observer, ፡ researcher, ፡ and ፡ artist. ፡ The ፡ project ፡ aligns ፡ with ፡ Walter ፡ Mignolo's ፡ decolonial ፡ theory, ፡ which ፡ challenges ፡ pre-established ፡ concepts ፡ of ፡ epistemicide ፡ and ፡ promotes ፡ an ፡ epistemic ፡ shift ፡ through ፡ pluriversality።

As ፡ the ፡ project ፡ progresses, ፡ it ፡ brings ፡ forth ፡ critical ፡ questions ፡ and ፡ adopts ፡ forms ፡ of ፡ secrecy, ፡ care, ፡ fear, ፡ and ፡ intensity ፡ required ፡ by ፡ spiritual ፡ relatedness. ፡ By ፡ initiating ፡ rituals ፡ and ፡ engagements ፡ across ፡ artistic ፡ instances, ፡ "Practising ፡ Water" ፡ establishes ፡ a ፡ space ፡ for ፡ learning ፡ and ፡ knowing. ፡ It ፡ ultimately ፡ aims ፡ to ፡ create ፡ a ፡ deeper ፡ understanding ፡ of ፡ the ፡ symbiotic ፡ relationships ፡ between ፡ water ፡ and ፡ spirituality, ፡ emphasizing ፡ the ፡ importance ፡ of ፡ localized, ፡ indigenous ፡ perspectives ፡ and ፡ inviting ፡ reflection ፡ on ፡ the ፡ broader ፡ implications ፡ of ፡ these ፡ relationships ፡ in ፡ contemporary ፡ society።
