Wax and Gold

Wax and Gold, a project initiated and developed by Netsa Art Village and funded by the Prince Claus Fund, is designed to navigate the state of freedom of expression in Ethiopia. The project draws on the historical concept of "Wax and Gold," an approach in Ethiopian literature known as Qinie, where messages are conveyed indirectly: the main message, the “Gold,” is hidden beneath the surface, the “Wax.” The project brought together five international artists/activists—Boniface Mwangi, Jelili Atiku, Peterson Kamawathi, Zenzele Chulu, and Norma D. Hunter—who shared experiences and collaborated with 12 Ethiopian artists to produce works of art. The outcome included a collective exhibition showcasing the results of the workshop. All projects were exhibited across Addis Ababa as part of a tour highlighting the live art practices of the workshop participants, culminating in a final exhibition at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design Gallery.
